Job Description

Role Overview

This librarian leads the day-to-day operations of the lower primary learning resource centre, transforming it into an active hub where young students build foundational reading habits and research skills. By managing the collection, teaching information literacy, and partnering with classroom teachers, this role directly supports the school’s goal of developing confident, curious lifelong learners from an early age.

Key Responsibilities

  • Organise and maintain the physical and digital collection—cataloguing books, tracking circulation data, and keeping inventory accurate—while recommending purchases, replacements, or removals.
  • Work closely with lower primary teachers to identify curriculum needs and supply relevant print, digital, and multimedia resources for lessons and projects.
  • Deliver age-appropriate instruction in library navigation, digital literacy, and responsible use of information, encouraging independent exploration and critical thinking.
  • Design and run reading initiatives, themed book displays, and literacy events that spark excitement about books and storytelling among students and families.
  • Ensure the learning resource centre is a safe, welcoming, and orderly space where every child feels comfortable reading, researching, and asking questions.
  • Stay current with children’s literature trends, educational technology, and library best practices, then apply that knowledge to refresh services and resources.
  • Coordinate school-wide literacy campaigns and events, collaborating with teachers and parents to build a strong reading culture beyond the library walls.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science, Information Studies, or an equivalent field from an accredited institution.
  • Additional training or certification in early childhood education, primary education, or literacy development is a strong advantage.
  • At least one to two years of practical library experience, ideally within a school—particularly a primary or lower primary setting.
  • Proven ability to promote reading and run engaging library programmes for young learners.
  • Experience collaborating with teachers to align library resources with curriculum delivery and enhance student learning outcomes.
  • Working knowledge of library management systems, Microsoft Office applications, and digital learning tools.
  • Familiarity with Competency-Based Education (CBE) frameworks is an added plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to plan and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Solid understanding of library classification, cataloguing standards, and information management practices.
  • Creative, proactive approach to designing literacy activities and solving everyday challenges in a school library environment.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and accountability, with a commitment to continuous learning and the school’s educational values.

What We Offer / Why Join

While specific benefits are not detailed, this role is set within a school that emphasises professional growth and a shared mission to nurture lifelong learning. You will have the opportunity to shape foundational literacy experiences for young children, work alongside dedicated educators, and contribute to a vibrant reading culture that extends into the wider school community.
