Lecturer, Special Needs Education- Hearing Impairments

Role Overview

This university lectureship focuses on preparing future educators and practitioners in the field of hearing impairment education. Reporting to the Dean of the School of Education, you will deliver instruction across undergraduate, diploma, and certificate levels while contributing to curriculum development, student assessment, and academic research. Your work directly shapes the quality of special needs teachers entering the profession and supports the institution’s mission to advance inclusive education through scholarship and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute actively to curriculum design and periodic review, ensuring course offerings remain relevant to current practices in hearing impairment education.
• Develop detailed course outlines and learning materials that map clearly to learning outcomes and support structured content delivery.
• Teach assigned courses across certificate, diploma, and undergraduate programs, adapting instructional methods to meet diverse learner needs.
• Set, administer, and invigilate examinations, then grade results and provide progressive feedback to the department on student performance.
• Supervise student projects and attend thesis or project defence sessions to guide candidates toward successful completion.
• Conduct research, publish findings in academic outlets, and present at conferences to contribute new knowledge to the field.
• Seek and secure external research funding to support institutional research priorities and expand scholarly capacity.
• Organise and facilitate field studies, internships, and attachment placements, assessing students during these practical experiences.
• Monitor lecture attendance records to verify that students meet the required attendance threshold of four-fifths before being eligible to sit for examinations.
• Participate in official university meetings and events, and undertake additional administrative responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A PhD in Special Needs Education with a focus on Hearing Impairments, earned from a recognised academic institution.
• A Master’s degree in Special Needs Education (Hearing Impairments) from a recognised academic institution.
• A Bachelor of Education (Special Needs Education) with specialisation in Hearing Impairment Education.
• At least three years of university-level teaching experience.
• Current registration with the relevant professional body for special needs educators.
• Demonstrated ability to teach, assess, and supervise students across multiple academic levels.
• A record of or capacity for research, publication, and conference participation in the discipline.
