Job Description

Role Overview

This position centres on delivering physiology instruction across undergraduate, diploma, and certificate programmes while advancing the department’s research agenda. Day-to-day work involves preparing course materials, teaching, assessing student progress, supervising projects, and guiding students through practical attachments. Beyond the classroom, the role contributes to curriculum development, scholarly publication, and securing research funding, all of which support the university’s academic mission and the department’s standing in the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, review, and refinement of physiology curricula to ensure alignment with academic standards and evolving industry needs.
  • Develop detailed course outlines and learning resources that fully cover the prescribed syllabus for each assigned unit.
  • Deliver lectures and facilitate learning for undergraduate, diploma, and certificate students in a clear and engaging manner.
  • Draft, administer, and invigilate examinations; evaluate student performance and provide structured feedback to the department.
  • Oversee student projects, attend defence sessions, and offer guidance to help learners complete their academic requirements successfully.
  • Conduct original research, produce publications, and present findings at conferences to contribute to the broader scientific community.
  • Actively pursue funding opportunities from external sources to support institutional research initiatives.
  • Coordinate fieldwork, internships, and industrial attachments; assess student performance during these practical experiences.
  • Participate in departmental and institutional meetings, committees, and official functions as required.
  • Monitor lecture attendance records to verify that students meet the minimum attendance threshold before sitting for examinations.
  • Undertake additional administrative duties as assigned by the Head of Department or university leadership.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Master of Medicine degree in Physiology from a recognised academic institution.
  • A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from an accredited university.
  • A minimum of three years of teaching and research experience within a recognised academic institution.
  • Demonstrated relevant work experience in industry, providing practical insight into applied physiology.
  • Full registration and a valid practising licence from the relevant professional body.
  • An earned PhD in the relevant discipline from a recognised university, or current registration or eligibility for registration in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme, which will be considered an added advantage.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, a commitment to research excellence, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary academic environment.
