Laboratory Technologist Interns

Role Overview

This is a supervised entry-level laboratory placement for a recently qualified medical laboratory technician, supporting the day-to-day analytical work of a testing laboratory that handles food, water, wastewater, beverage, and biological samples. Reporting to a laboratory supervisor, the post holder moves between chemical and microbiological bench work, taking samples from intake through analysis and documentation, and helping ensure every result the laboratory issues is accurate and traceable. Because those results feed into public health, regulatory, and safety decisions, disciplined record-keeping and strict adherence to approved methods are as important as hands-on technical ability.

Key Responsibilities

• Receive, log, and document incoming samples, verifying labelling, chain-of-custody information, and accompanying request forms before releasing them for analysis.
• Clean, disinfect, and sterilise glassware, work surfaces, instruments, and reusable laboratory equipment in line with established hygiene procedures.
• Prepare reagents, solutions, media, and standards needed for scheduled chemical and microbiological testing, confirming concentrations and checking shelf life.
• Carry out chemical and microbiological analysis on food, water, wastewater, and beverage samples using the laboratory's approved methods.
• Extract, isolate, and identify target analytes such as drugs, pesticide residues, and heavy metals from biological and miscellaneous sample matrices.
• Record raw results and observations accurately in laboratory registers and information systems, escalating any readings outside expected limits to the supervisor.
• Segregate, treat, and dispose of laboratory waste in accordance with safety and environmental requirements.
• Monitor consumable stock levels and perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Kenyan citizen aged 35 years or below.
• Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences, or an equivalent qualification from an institution recognised by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB), obtained within the last twenty-four (24) months.
• Valid registration certificate issued by KMLTTB.
• Current practising licence from KMLTTB.
• Certificate in computer application skills from a recognised institution.
• Must not have previously participated in a similar internship programme, nor gained post-graduation work experience in the field of study.
• Must not have exited formal employment.
