Kitchen Steward

Role Overview

This position keeps the kitchen and dining environment clean, safe, and ready for service. The person in this role handles dishwashing, waste removal, surface cleaning, and basic support to cooks so meal preparation stays on schedule. Their reliability directly protects food safety standards and helps the whole kitchen team work efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

• Clean and sanitize dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, pans, and other serviceware using industrial dish machines or manual washing methods.
• Keep kitchen, dining, and food preparation areas tidy by routinely cleaning floors, counters, equipment, and work surfaces.
• Collect and remove food waste, recyclables, and general refuse, and empty bins before they overflow.
• Monitor kitchen supplies such as cleaning agents, serviceware, and other materials, and tell management when stock is running low.
• Check kitchen appliances and equipment for proper operation, and report faults or damage to the kitchen manager or chef.
• Help cooks and other kitchen staff by preparing basic ingredients, such as cutting vegetables, and gathering items needed for service.
• Follow all health, safety, and hygiene rules, including safe food handling and correct use of cleaning chemicals.
• Maintain organised storage areas so utensils, equipment, and supplies are easy to find and safely kept.

Requirements & Qualifications

• KCSE certificate or an equivalent school qualification.
• At least one year of hands-on experience in a comparable kitchen support, steward, or dishwashing role.
• Working knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices, including safe cleaning and chemical handling.
• Ability to operate standard kitchen equipment and dishwashing machinery correctly and safely.
• Certificate in hospitality management and food production is an added advantage.
• Valid Certificate of Good Conduct.
• Physical stamina to stand, move, lift, and work in a hot, fast-paced kitchen for extended periods.
