Job Description

Role Overview

As an Investment Officer, you will be the primary point of contact for entrepreneurs seeking financing, guiding them from initial inquiry through appraisal, approval, and disbursement. Day to day, you will conduct field-based due diligence, manage a portfolio of active borrowers, and ensure repayment discipline while also maintaining the core banking system that tracks every investment. Your work directly supports Inkomoko’s mission to help small and growing businesses in Kenya access the capital they need to thrive and create jobs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to entrepreneur inquiries, explain the terms and obligations of our investment products, and guide applicants through the full onboarding process.
  • Perform structured investment appraisals by gathering personal, business, and guarantor information, then open new investment accounts for approved applicants.
  • Conduct on-site due diligence for prospective borrowers, coordinate with business advisors and associates, and prepare complete documentation for credit decisions.
  • Prepare and execute investment contracts, arrange in-kind disbursement, and collect signed photo waivers while ensuring borrower stories are accurately posted for crowdfunding.
  • Monitor an active loan portfolio through regular client visits and follow-ups, keeping delinquency and default rates within the targets set during annual planning.
  • Maintain and update the Core Banking System (CBS-powered by mifos), recording disbursements, repayments, payoffs, and balances while ensuring data accuracy and proper user access controls.
  • Collaborate with the finance team to generate invoices, reconcile monthly investment transactions, and prepare reports for portfolio reviews and investment committee meetings.
  • Engage with government officials, court systems, and legal processes when necessary to resolve non-payment issues and enforce collection efforts.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A university degree in Finance or a related field, with 4+ years of professional experience in lending, microfinance, or investment management.
  • Must be fluent in English and Swahili; knowledge of a local language is an added advantage, as is experience with Islamic lending practices.
  • Strong financial and accounting skills, including familiarity with Kenyan business financial policies and the ability to interpret borrower financial statements.
  • Prior experience in a lending environment, working with micro and small enterprises, and handling customer debt collection or credit recovery.
  • Hands-on experience with investment management systems or core banking software, plus a proactive approach to improving system workflows and automating processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and assertively, even when delivering unwelcome news about payment obligations, and experience managing difficult clients toward positive outcomes.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, strong follow-through, and comfort navigating the civil court system; previous litigation experience is preferred.
  • Must possess personal integrity, perseverance, critical thinking skills, and be legally eligible to work in Kenya.
