Role Overview
This role keeps ceramic production running smoothly by testing the raw materials, glazes, and slurry/pulp that feed the line. On a typical shift, you will sample incoming materials and in-process batches, measure critical properties like density, viscosity, moisture, and fineness, and turn those numbers into clear pass/fail guidance for production teams. Because a single out-of-spec batch can ruin a firing or halt a line, your accuracy and speed directly protect product quality and reduce costly downtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Pull and prepare representative samples of glaze, slurry/pulp, and ceramic raw materials for routine and check testing.
- Run physical and chemical tests to determine density, viscosity, moisture content, fineness, and other specified properties.
- Follow written test methods and standard operating procedures so results stay repeatable and comparable across batches.
- Log test data promptly, analyse trends or deviations, and communicate results to production and quality colleagues.
- Identify materials that fall outside specification and escalate them to the appropriate supervisor without delay.
- Work alongside production staff to troubleshoot material behaviour, quality upsets, and process inconsistencies.
- Keep lab instruments clean, calibrated, and ready for use; manage sample storage and laboratory housekeeping.
- Observe all laboratory safety rules and wear the required personal protective equipment at all times.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, or a related technical field.
- One to three years of practical experience in a laboratory, quality control, manufacturing, or similar production setting.
- Demonstrated ability to perform laboratory testing and sample preparation with minimal supervision.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail when recording, analysing, and reporting data.
- Comfort working at production pace, handling multiple test requests, and adapting to shifting priorities.
- Clear communication skills for sharing findings with operators, supervisors, and quality teams.
