Job Description

Role Overview

The Executive Communications Lead partners with the CEO and senior leaders to shape clear, credible communications for staff, external audiences and high-level engagements. Reporting to the Director of Communications, this role turns complex scientific, policy and organizational issues into accurate, persuasive messages, while coordinating with teams across the organization to keep leadership communications aligned with institutional priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write and edit speeches, remarks, talking points, presentations, correspondence, statements and briefing materials for the CEO and other senior leaders.
  • Prepare leaders for interviews, meetings, conferences, panels, donor conversations and other important engagements with tailored briefs, background research and anticipated questions.
  • Research current policy, scientific, political and institutional developments; verify evidence and consult subject-matter experts to ensure communications are both accessible and accurate.
  • Develop executive narratives and thought-leadership content, including opinion pieces, commentaries, forewords and social media materials, that support the organization’s priorities.
  • Plan communications for major conferences, summits and organizational convenings, coordinating with events, media, digital and program colleagues before and after each engagement.
  • Draft internal messages and prepare leaders for staff meetings, town halls and other forums, taking care with tone and timing on sensitive issues.
  • Work with corporate, regional, project and technical teams to identify relevant evidence, stories and opportunities for leadership visibility.
  • Maintain high editorial standards and a consistent, authentic executive voice across channels; improve review processes and messaging guidance as needed.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in communications, journalism, international relations, public policy, environmental studies or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • At least 5–10 years of progressively responsible communications experience, including substantial work supporting executives or senior leaders.
  • Exceptional English writing and editing ability, with a portfolio or track record demonstrating executive-level communications.
  • Experience producing speeches, talking points, executive briefs, presentations and high-level correspondence.
  • Strong research, synthesis and fact-checking skills, including the ability to explain technical or scientific material without losing accuracy.
  • Sound editorial judgement, discretion and the ability to adapt writing to different leaders, audiences and institutional contexts.
  • Experience in international policy, development, science, environmental issues or a related area is strongly preferred.
