Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager

Role Overview

This is a group-level leadership position accountable for establishing and enforcing one consistent environment, health, and safety (EHS) framework across all operating companies. The role holder directs a shared-services EHS team, with day-to-day execution delegated to site officers, while personally owning risk visibility, escalation of critical exposures, and enforcement of mandatory minimum standards. Success is measured by preventing fatalities, environmental regulatory shutdowns, and material incidents rather than by activity volume or administrative completeness.

Key Responsibilities

• Define and enforce Group EHS minimum standards across fire protection, chemical and solvent handling, machinery safety and lockout procedures, high-risk contractor work, effluent treatment, emissions control, and waste management.
• Maintain a live Group Critical Risk Register covering the top risks at every site, with immediate escalation of any condition that could trigger a NEMA-type shutdown, licence suspension, fatality, major fire, or uncontrolled environmental release.
• Lead the shared-services EHS model by clarifying what the Group function owns (standards, audits, escalation) versus what individual sites own (execution, daily compliance, operational control), and oversee a team of EHS officers deployed across all companies.
• Conduct weekly operational check-ins and monthly performance reviews, plus quarterly structured reviews with each company CEO, ensuring documented ownership of actions and escalation to the Board for unresolved risks.
• Establish strict controls over effluent treatment plants, waste disposal, air emissions, and chemical storage, with early warning triggers that flag potential regulatory breaches before they occur.
• Standardise fire detection and suppression systems, flammable solvent storage, emergency preparedness, and high-risk production controls—including lamination, printing, generators, and boilers—so minimum fire protections remain active at all times.
• Take command of incident and crisis response for serious injuries, environmental events, fires, and major operational disruptions, ensuring immediate reporting, sound root-cause investigation, and consistent regulator engagement.
• Integrate EHS into procurement approvals, contractor selection, and high-risk project execution, enforcing permit-to-work systems, approved risk assessments, and supervision for all dangerous work.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Relevant degree in environmental science, occupational health and safety, engineering, or a related discipline; a postgraduate qualification or professional EHS certification is strongly preferred.
• Ten or more years of progressive EHS leadership experience within manufacturing, industrial processing, or comparable high-risk environments, with at least five years managing multi-site programmes.
• Demonstrated command of risk-based regulation and compliance frameworks covering environmental discharge permits, emissions limits, fire safety certification, and statutory inspections, including direct experience with regulatory shutdown prevention.
• Proven track record of leading teams under a shared-services or matrix structure, coaching EHS officers, and enforcing accountability across site-level operational leadership.
• Hands-on expertise in effluent treatment plant operations, chemical handling, hazardous waste management, fire protection engineering, and contractor safety governance.
• Strong investigative and analytical ability for serious incident review, root-cause analysis, and corrective action closure, with experience presenting directly to CEOs and Boards.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of distilling complex risk information into concise recommendations, group dashboards, and executive summaries.
