Role Overview
This relationship manager drives the bank’s revenue growth by forging strong partnerships with clients across Kenya’s agricultural value chain—from commercial farms and agro-processors to cooperatives and exporters. Day to day, the role involves originating and structuring tailored corporate banking solutions—such as seasonal loans, trade finance, and asset financing—that match the unique cash-flow cycles and risk profiles of agricultural enterprises. Success here directly expands the bank’s corporate loan book while deepening loyalty within a strategically vital sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Prospect and onboard new corporate clients operating at every stage of the agricultural value chain: input suppliers, primary producers, traders, processors, and export firms.
- Structure and negotiate credit facilities—including working capital lines, commodity-backed loans, and equipment finance—that align with seasonal production and marketing timelines.
- Prepare thorough credit applications, conduct on-site due diligence, and present well-supported risk analyses to internal credit committees.
- Monitor borrower financial health, covenant compliance, and early-warning signals; proactively initiate remedial actions or restructuring when needed.
- Cross-sell treasury, cash management, and trade services to enhance client stickiness and increase non-fund-based income.
- Track key agricultural market dynamics (commodity prices, weather patterns, policy changes) to anticipate client needs and adjust portfolio strategies.
- Cultivate referral networks through industry associations, government agricultural agencies, and agribusiness consultancies to sustain a healthy deal pipeline.
- Contribute to portfolio growth targets by mentoring junior relationship officers and sharing sector-specific intelligence with the broader corporate banking team.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Banking, Agriculture, Agribusiness Management, or a closely related field.
- Professional certifications: AKIB, CPA(K), ACCA, CFA, or equivalent will be considered a strong advantage.
- Experience: At least five years in corporate banking, relationship management, or business development—with a minimum of three years specifically managing corporate client relationships.
- Sector expertise: Direct experience handling agribusiness or agriculture-sector clients is highly preferred.
- Domain knowledge: Solid understanding of agricultural finance, commodity markets, and value-chain financing structures, including the seasonal and cyclical risks inherent in agri-lending.
- Core competencies: Strong credit analysis, financial modelling, negotiation, and presentation skills; ability to build trust with clients operating in both formal and informal agricultural channels.
