Role Overview
This CNC Machine Operator role sits on the factory floor in Athi River and reports to the Production Supervisor. The operator prepares CNC lathes, mills, or routers for each job, runs the machining cycle, and checks completed parts against engineering drawings so that production stays accurate and on schedule. The employer relies on this position to keep tolerances tight, catch quality problems early, and protect both machine uptime and shop-floor safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, calibrate, and operate CNC machines according to job specifications and the day’s production schedule.
- Load raw stock, secure fixtures, establish tool offsets, and run G-code/M-code programs accurately.
- Watch live machining cycles and adjust feeds, speeds, coolant flow, and tooling as needed to maintain part quality.
- Read and interpret mechanical, structural, and technical engineering blueprints.
- Inspect finished components with vernier calipers, micrometers, dial gauges, and other precision measuring tools.
- Compare measured dimensions against required tolerances, log quality exceptions, and flag out-of-spec parts immediately.
- Carry out daily operator maintenance such as lubrication checks, basic cleaning, and routine machine condition monitoring.
- Keep the work area clean and hazard-free, follow PPE and factory safety rules, and report mechanical faults, tool damage, or program errors to maintenance engineers and line supervisors.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Plant Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Experience: Practical, hands-on experience setting up and running CNC machines in an active manufacturing or engineering workshop.
- Technical skills: Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, shop blueprints, and technical instructions.
- Measurement skills: Proficiency with precision measuring tools and gauges is highly preferred.
- Detail orientation: Strong focus on tolerances, exact dimensions, and zero-defect output.
- Safety and reliability: Commitment to machine shop safety codes and consistent attendance.
- Teamwork: Good communication skills and the ability to work smoothly with workshop supervisors and quality control teams.
