Role Overview
This is a dual-focus store position based in Ndenderu, Limuru, where you will split your working day between the checkout counter and the back office. On the front end, you are responsible for ringing up customer purchases quickly and correctly and for making sure every shilling taken in is accounted for by the end of your shift. Behind the scenes, you keep the paperwork that holds the store together — delivery notes, invoices, stock tallies, and daily sales summaries — accurate and easy to trace. Because you touch both cash and inventory records, the reliability you bring directly protects the store's margins and the trust its customers place in it.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate the POS terminal to process customer purchases, confirming prices, quantities, and change before completing each sale and keeping queues moving during peak trading hours.
- Handle all payment types the store accepts — cash, mobile money transfers, and card payments — and issue the correct receipt for every transaction.
- Count the opening float and reconcile the cash drawer at the end of each shift, reporting any shortage, overage, or unexplained variance to management immediately.
- Record daily sales, customer refunds, and cash collections in the store registers, keeping the supporting documents attached to each entry.
- Receive incoming merchandise, check it against the delivery note and supplier invoice, and log quantities received, shortfalls, or damaged items before stock reaches the shelves.
- Monitor stock levels on the shelves and in the store reserves, flagging low inventory, expired products, and damaged goods for reorder or write-off.
- Take part in periodic physical stock counts and verify that shelf price labels match the prices held in the system.
- Maintain an orderly filing system for receipts, supplier invoices, dispatch notes, and transaction records, and prepare daily sales summaries, stock tallies, and cash flow updates for supervisory review.
- Assist customers with enquiries, support colleagues at the front of store during busy periods, and keep the till point and back office area clean and secure.
Requirements & Qualifications
- KCSE certificate as a minimum academic baseline; a diploma in business administration, sales, or a related discipline is an added advantage.
- Prior hands-on experience in a supermarket, minimart, wholesale outlet, or another fast-paced retail store environment.
- Working familiarity with a POS system, barcode scanner, and inventory register, with the ability to pick up the store's own software with brief training.
- Strong numeracy and record-keeping skills — the ability to spot a mismatch in a cash count, delivery note, or stock tally without being prompted.
- Proven honesty and reliability in handling cash and confidential store records.
- An organised approach to paperwork, with the discipline to file documents as they arise rather than catching up later.
- Resilience under pressure: able to stand for long periods, manage high customer traffic, and switch between checkout duties and administrative tasks as the shift demands.
- Clear communication and a collaborative attitude, particularly when escalating a cash or stock problem to a supervisor.
