Job Description

Role Overview

This is a floor-based quality role, not a desk job: you will spend your shift moving between the corrugator, printing units, die-cutter, folder-gluer, stitcher, and packing area, checking that what comes in, what runs on the machines, and what goes out all match the approved sample and the customer's specification. You act as the plant's early warning system — catching a drifting dimension, a weak glue line, or an off-register print run while it is still a small correction rather than a full batch of scrap. Done well, this job protects the factory's delivery promises to buyers and keeps rework, rejection, and material waste under control.

Key Responsibilities

  • Check incoming kraft paper, corrugated sheets, inks, adhesives, and other packaging inputs against approved samples and material specifications, and set aside or flag anything that does not conform.
  • Run scheduled and spot inspections at every stage of conversion — corrugation, printing, die-cutting, slotting, folding, gluing, stitching, and packing — instead of relying on a single end-of-line check.
  • Measure and verify board quality, carton dimensions, print registration and colour, alignment, cutting accuracy, folding, joint strength, and overall finish using the appropriate inspection tools.
  • Compare finished cartons with the signed-off sample, drawing, or customer brief; segregate and label rejects and hold stock so that only conforming product moves into packing and dispatch.
  • Maintain inspection checklists, batch records, and daily quality reports, and track rejection, rework, wastage, and repeat defect trends over time.
  • Escalate quality deviations promptly to the production or quality supervisor, take part in root-cause investigations, and follow up to confirm that corrective actions actually prevent recurrence.
  • Coordinate closely with machine operators, supervisors, maintenance, stores, and the wider quality team, giving timely feedback on deviations and suggesting practical changes that cut defects, scrap, and rework.
  • Apply the company's quality procedures and factory safety rules at all times, conducting inspections safely and reporting any serious quality or safety concern immediately.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: KCSE, secondary school completion, or an equivalent qualification. A certificate, diploma, or degree in quality control, production or manufacturing, packaging technology, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2–5 years of hands-on quality or production experience inside a carton, corrugated packaging, paper packaging, or comparable manufacturing plant. Time spent working directly in a carton factory is strongly preferred.
  • Process knowledge: A working understanding of how corrugated board and cartons are made, from raw material through converting to finished pack, including the sequence and purpose of corrugation, printing, die-cutting, slotting, folding, gluing, and stitching.
  • Defect recognition: The ability to spot typical carton and packaging faults on sight and by measurement — for example print or colour deviations, dimension and slot misalignment, poor folding or glue bonds, board and finish problems — and to judge how serious each one is.
  • Specification literacy: Comfort working from product specifications, approved samples, drawings, and customer requirements, and translating them into concrete pass/fail decisions on the line.
  • Inspection skills: Competence with basic measuring and inspection equipment, and the discipline to record readings and observations accurately and consistently.
  • Quality systems: Familiarity with standard quality control procedures, sampling checks, defect documentation, and corrective-action follow-up.
  • Added advantage: Basic familiarity with production machinery and how machine settings affect output quality.

The person who fits best here has stood beside these machines and learned quality from the board and the print itself, not only from a textbook — someone who can walk up to a running line, identify what is wrong, and explain it clearly enough for the operator to fix it.
