Job Description

Role Overview

This position centres on the safe, timely transfer of bulk cement in a pressurised tanker from the plant loading point to customer silos and batching plants across Kenya. The driver is entrusted with the prime mover, the trailer and the product itself, and must safeguard both product quantity and quality during transit and discharge. Daily activity involves completing vehicle checks, managing documentation at the weighbridge, operating the compressor system during offloading, and adhering strictly to journey plans and site safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip checks on the prime mover and tanker, covering tyres, brakes, coupling, air lines, compressor, hoses, valves, pressure gauges and relief valves, and report any fault before departure.
  • Weigh the unit at the weighbridge for tare and gross readings, confirm the net loaded quantity matches dispatch documents, and ensure all manhole covers and discharge outlets are sealed before leaving the plant.
  • Verify the tanker is clean, dry and free of residue or contamination prior to loading, and take measures to prevent moisture from entering the product during the entire trip.
  • Operate the compressor, aeration system and discharge line correctly during offloading, keeping discharge pressure and blowing time within the recommended range and stopping immediately if pressure readings become unsafe.
  • Connect and disconnect discharge hoses to customer silos following site personnel direction, confirm the receiving silo is the correct grade and has sufficient capacity, and remain present for the whole discharge process.
  • Comply with all plant and customer site safety requirements, including wearing personal protective equipment, observing no-smoking zones, traffic marshalling and induction procedures.
  • Follow the assigned route from the Transport and Logistics office, adhere to the journey management plan, and seek authorisation for any deviation or overnight stop.
  • Collect a signed and stamped proof of delivery for every consignment, reconcile the discharged quantity against the loaded quantity, and report any variance without delay.
  • Submit trip sheets, weighbridge tickets, delivery notes and fuel documentation on return, and account for any cash or fuel card issued.
  • Keep to the service schedule for both the prime mover and trailer, present the unit for routine maintenance, calibration and inspection, and verify that reported faults were rectified upon release.
  • Report all accidents, spillages, incidents, breakdowns and traffic offences to the Transport and Logistics office and the police where required, and cooperate fully with any investigation.
  • Observe the vehicle tracking system, speed limits, driving hours and all company transport management and fleet safety policies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the unit and keep the cabin free of unauthorised persons and goods.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Minimum KCSE certificate; a college certificate in transport, logistics or motor vehicle mechanics is an added advantage.
  • Valid NTSA smart driving licence with Class CE endorsement covering articulated and trailer combinations.
  • Valid Certificate of Good Conduct and a valid defensive driving certificate from a recognised institution.
  • At least seven years of commercial driving experience, with a minimum of three years driving bulk tankers or articulated units in cement, clinker, fuel or another comparable bulk product.
  • Demonstrated competence in operating pressurised discharge and compressor systems.
  • Sound knowledge of Kenyan traffic laws, axle load regulations and NTSA operating requirements.
  • Working knowledge of bulk cement handling, silo discharge practice and product contamination risks.
  • Strong safety awareness, including hazard identification at both plant and customer sites.
  • Good route knowledge across Kenya and solid organisational skills to work to a delivery schedule.
  • Clear communication skills for completing delivery, discharge and incident reports, and the ability to follow instructions without supervision.
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills for engaging with batching plant and site personnel.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, travel upcountry and undertake cross-border trips.
  • High personal and professional integrity, particularly when handling products.
