Role Overview
This senior leadership position places you at the heart of a health facility's medical engineering operations, where you will shape how technology is selected, deployed, and maintained. Your work directly influences patient safety, diagnostic accuracy, and the long-term cost efficiency of clinical services. Day to day, you will balance strategic oversight with hands-on coordination of engineers, technicians, and preventive maintenance schedules, ensuring every piece of medical equipment performs reliably when clinicians need it most.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead comprehensive health technology assessments, evaluating clinical effectiveness, safety, and lifecycle costs to guide evidence-based purchasing decisions.
- Develop detailed technical specifications and procurement reports for medical equipment and plant, ensuring alignment with clinical needs and regulatory standards.
- Design and implement medical engineering programs that improve operational efficiency and introduce sustainable technology solutions across the facility.
- Supervise the installation, calibration, and commissioning of medical devices, furniture, and plant infrastructure, while maintaining compliance with safety protocols.
- Coordinate a facility-wide planned preventive maintenance schedule (PPMO) and monitor adherence to minimise downtime and extend asset life.
- Oversee a central database of medical engineering services, tracking equipment history, maintenance activity, and performance metrics for informed decision-making.
- Support the rollout of e-health and tele-medicine platforms, providing technical guidance on integration, interoperability, and device connectivity.
- Design and deliver training programs that equip clinical and technical staff with the practical skills needed for safe equipment use and basic troubleshooting.
- Manage periodic reporting, work plans, and resource allocation while coaching and mentoring junior engineering personnel to build a high-performing team.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A minimum of three (3) years of service in the role of Principal Medical Engineer, with demonstrated efficiency in organising work and discharging medical engineering functions.
- A Bachelor's degree in Medical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Control and Instrumentation, Industrial Technology (Medical Engineering Option), Electrical Engineering, Telecommunication, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or another equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
- A Master's degree in Medical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Health Care Management, Project Management, or another equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
- A certificate in a Senior Management Course of at least four (4) weeks' duration from a recognised institution.
- A certificate in computer skills from a recognised institution, reflecting proficiency in relevant software and data management tools.
- A proven track record of successfully delivering medical engineering projects, coordinating teams, and maintaining critical healthcare technology assets.
