Role Overview
The Authorized Securities Dealer builds liquidity and client activity in Kenyan government securities and other approved fixed-income products. Day to day, the role involves pricing and executing trades, interpreting market and economic developments, and advising institutional and other clients on investment opportunities. Sound dealing, disciplined risk management, and strong relationships help support clients’ investment needs while contributing to sustainable trading revenue and orderly markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Quote competitive two-way prices and trade actively in primary and secondary markets for Treasury bills, Treasury bonds, infrastructure bonds, corporate bonds, and other approved instruments.
- Manage the trading book within approved limits and delegated authority, balancing execution quality and profitability against market, liquidity, and interest-rate risks.
- Cover corporate, institutional, and high-net-worth clients; identify their investment needs and present relevant securities, market commentary, yield analysis, and trading ideas.
- Track yield curves, interest-rate expectations, inflation, fiscal and monetary policy, sovereign debt developments, and other factors that may affect fixed-income prices.
- Assess securities using pricing, yield, duration, and portfolio-performance analysis; identify unusual exposures or market movements and escalate material risks or limit breaches promptly.
- Take part in Central Bank of Kenya Treasury bill and bond auctions, contribute to bidding and allocation decisions, interpret results, and coordinate transaction allocation, settlement, and reconciliation with internal teams.
- Maintain accurate records of trades, client instructions, and communications, and comply with applicable Central Bank of Kenya and Capital Markets Authority requirements, internal controls, and AML, KYC, sanctions, and market-conduct standards.
- Work with custody operations, treasury back office, banking teams, risk, compliance, legal, finance, and external market participants to support effective dealing and service.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, banking, accounting, mathematics, statistics, business administration, or a related discipline.
- Four to seven years of relevant experience in fixed-income trading, treasury, capital markets, securities dealing, custody, or institutional sales.
- Practical experience in government securities markets and engagement with institutional clients; familiarity with Kenyan fixed-income market practices and regulation is required.
- Working knowledge of fixed-income pricing, government securities execution, yield-to-maturity, yield-curve and duration analysis, portfolio monitoring, market making, and trading risk.
- Ability to interpret macroeconomic and interest-rate developments and turn analysis into clear client guidance or investment recommendations.
- Proficiency with Bloomberg, Reuters, or comparable market data platforms, alongside advanced Excel capability and financial-modelling skills.
- Understanding of primary-market auction procedures, securities settlement, and custody processes.
- ACI Dealing Certificate, CFA qualification or candidacy, CISI qualification, CPA(K), ACCA, or another relevant treasury or capital-markets credential is an advantage.
- Strong commercial judgement, negotiation, communication, analytical and relationship-management skills, with integrity, attention to compliance, and the ability to perform under tight market deadlines.
