Role: Accountant

Industry: Education

Gross Salary: Kshs. 60,000 – 70,000

Location: Rongai, Nairobi

Position Objective

Our client, a well-established educational institution, is seeking a meticulous and highly organized Accountant. This role is central to maintaining the institution’s commitment to financial transparency and governance. You will be responsible for the full spectrum of financial operations, from day-to-day bookkeeping in QuickBooks to high-level statutory compliance and audit preparation. The ideal candidate is a seasoned professional who can balance technical accounting accuracy with the leadership required to supervise junior staff and provide strategic financial insights to management.

Core Deliverables

Financial Control & Reporting

  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate day-to-day accounting records using QuickBooks.

  • Generate timely financial reports, ensuring they meet both internal institutional standards and legal requirements.

  • Oversee M-Pesa, bank, and cash management, ensuring all reconciliations are completed by the 10th of each month.

  • Implement and monitor robust internal financial controls to mitigate risk and safeguard the institution’s assets.

  • Support the annual audit process by preparing detailed schedules and serving as the primary point of contact for auditors.

Revenue & Expenditure Management

  • Manage the accounts receivable ledger, including the generation of school fee invoices and the diligent follow-up of collections.

  • Verify and post vendor invoices accurately, ensuring all payments are processed in line with approved procurement procedures.

  • Monitor accounts payable to ensure timely supplier payments and maintain healthy vendor relationships.

  • Track and report on grants and donations, ensuring full compliance with donor-specific reporting requirements.

Payroll & Statutory Compliance

  • Prepare and process the monthly payroll, ensuring absolute accuracy in deductions including PAYE, NSSF, SHA, NITA, and WHT.

  • File all statutory returns on time to avoid penalties and ensure the institution remains in good standing with regulatory bodies.

  • Maintain an updated fixed assets register and manage the archiving of financial records in accordance with retention policies.

  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and suggest improvements to existing financial processes to enhance efficiency.

Candidate Requirements

Academic & Professional Background

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Certification: CPA (K) or an equivalent professional qualification is highly preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, ideally within the education sector or a non-profit environment.

  • Software: Proven proficiency in using QuickBooks and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Leadership: Proven ability to supervise staff and manage cross-functional workflows.
