Job Description

Nursing Officer

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Nursing Officer to join our team in a challenging humanitarian setting. The successful candidate will work in a specific ward or clinic, serving as both a supervisor and team leader for refugee staff while ensuring the delivery of high-quality nursing care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and assist doctors during rounds as required.
  • Ensure all prescribed observations, treatments, and procedures are properly carried out and documented on patient charts.
  • Refer relevant information—such as patient status and laboratory results—to the doctor in charge or the doctor/CO on call to support proper clinical management.
  • Arrange and submit weekly clinic/ward work schedules; plan daily duties and responsibilities for each refugee staff member.
  • Participate in camp health surveys and campaigns.
  • Conduct regular training sessions for refugee staff on basic nursing care, management of various ward/clinic cases, and charting.
  • Provide health education to patients and clients.
  • Compile and submit monthly reports.
  • Monitor and supervise proper usage of supplies.
  • Maintain equipment in good condition and submit regular inventory reports.
  • Maintain drug registers and monitor drug consumption at the ward level.
  • Ensure that all admissions, discharges, transfers, and deaths are properly recorded as they occur.
  • Take and record vital signs; ensure proper documentation of all nursing procedures.
  • Ensure the clinic/ward is cleaned to the expected standards.
  • Perform coverage and be on-call as required.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Over two (2) years’ experience in a clinical nursing role.
  • Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing from KMTC or another recognized nurse-training institute.
  • Valid and current registration license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
