The Mater Hospital was opened in 1962 by the Sisters of Mercy, a Catholic Order of Nuns originating from Ireland, three years after registering themselves as the Registered Trustees of an entity under the Perpetual Succession Act (the succeeding legislation after independence). The "Sisters of Mercy" first set up a 60 bed general hospital to cater mainly for the poor, indigenous Kenyans, with the primary mission being general healthcare. The colonial authorities granted 12 acres of land in a swampy, mosquito-infested area, which has since become the Industrial Area of Nairobi. In 1970, a 60-bed maternity ward was opened with antenatal, postnatal and immunization clinics attached in order to upgrade the quality of maternity healthcare available to the poorer segments of the Nairobi population. Job Description
Main Duties:
- Coordinating clinical presentations to assist learners achieve critical thinking.
- Preparing new learners' orientation program and implementing it to ensure quick settlement at the school
- Following learners in clinical placements whether within and outside the hospital
- Planning for and conducting theoretical assessments of learners
- Assessing practical books regularly to establish the level of proficiency attained by the learners in conducting procedures.
- Producing and distributing course learning objectives as well as learners’schedules to the clinical placement sites
- Designing master rotations, assessment schedules or any other teaching and learning tool
- Communicating with the academic team and the clinical nursing department as necessary to resolve concerns raised
- Collaborating with colleagues to revise and evaluate course contents
- Discussing with learners their concerns/ challenges and directly or indirectly related to the learning experience
- Participating in quality improvement initiatives within the department and the hospital and providing reports as required
- Any other duty assigned from time to time
Required Qualifications and Skills for the Position
- KRN/M, KRCHN, BScN
- Higher National Diploma in Critical care or Nephrology Nursing is MANDATORY
- 2 Years Experience in active teaching in both classroom and clinical areas.
- Competence in clinical skills in areas of teaching
- Good planning and organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication and analytical skills
- Demonstrable training skills
- Valid BLS/ACLS certificate
- Valid Nursing Council of Kenya practice license.
