Description: The Kenya School of Law (KSL) is the only bar school in Kenya. After their completion of an Undergraduate Degrees in Law from a recognized university, students attend the Kenya School of Law to be prepared for admission to the Kenyan Bar. The Kenya School of Law was established as a law vocational training school in 1963. However, the establishment of Faculties of Law in East African universities led to a need to change the training offered at the Kenya School of Law. The Kenya School of Law was re-established as in 1995 to provide the Advocates Training Program which focused on the preparation of young lawyers for entry into the legal profession. In 2005, a ministerial task force on the Development of a Policy and Legal Framework for Legal Education in Kenya expanded the mandate of the Kenya School of Law to include the following: Advocates Training Continuing Professional Legal Development Paralegal Training The provision of Specialized Professional Legal Training in Public Service Conducting of Projects, Consultancies and Research The Council of Legal Education Act is the basis of legal training in Kenya.
Job Description

Overall purpose of the job

  • Reporting to the Principal Librarian, the incumbent will assist in the implementation of Library and Information Services policies, procedures and processes.

Job specifications (duties)

The specific duties and responsibilities of the officer will entail assisting in: -

  • Undertaking Library and information services assignments in line with the approved Library strategies, policies and procedures to confirm the adequacy and effectiveness of services offered;
  • Providing input in preparation of monthly Library reports;
  • Providing inputs for the update of Library and Information strategies, policies and procedures;
  • Ensuring availability of adequate and authentic Library and research information resources to meet the needs of the School programs;
  • Providing input in developing, implementing and regularly reviewing Information Literacy and Competency Training curriculum for ATP&PTP students to ensure their ease of access and utilization of e-resources in the library;
  • Safeguarding the Library assets by establishing appropriate means of verifying their existence, ownership and valuation;
  • Organizing and managing periodicals/reference/reprographic services/archives/special collection/rare books section;
  • Research Support services;
  • Cataloguing, classifying and barcoding of Library materials using a standard classification scheme and Anglo American Cataloguing Rules to maintain standardization of records;
  • Online accessioning of print Library material;
  • Offering circulation services to Library users;
  • Stock taking exercise; and
  • Organization/shelving of information resources to ensure easy retrieval.

Persons’ specifications

For appointment to the grade, one must have:

  • Bachelors degree in Library and Information Science or Computer Science from a recognized Institution;
  • Meet requirements of Chapter six of the Constitution; and
  • Proficiency in Computer Applications.
