Job Description

Job Overview:

 

The Campaign Lead will oversee the strategic planning and execution of the responsive campaign work in GPAF using an integrated approach that enables fundraising and engaging audiences to build counter-power effectively. The role will design evidence-based, data-driven campaigns working closely with different teams to ensure effective delivery of the Forests and Biodiversity work. The role will build internal cohesion for Forests & Biodiversity work across key interactions. The role will monitor the emerging Forests & Biodiversity opportunities in the African landscape, analyze trends, and table suggestions for GPAf to respond to. The role will also work closely with other campaign leads to design multi-sectoral response strategies. The role will functionally supervise the campaigners, interns and work closely with the Congo Basin Country Coordinators to ensure quality, coordinated delivery of the Forest & Biodiversity outcomes. The role effectively engages key stakeholders, including government, businesses, lawyers, farmers, media, and civil society, to coordinate the execution of responsive interventions. 

Main duties 

Strategic planning

  • Participate in and contribute to the proposals and assessments of the Greenpeace Africa program strategy.
  • Lead and coordinate the strategy development and implementation plans for the Forests and Biodiversity work.
  • Assist in strategically developing the campaign’s social, economic, political, legislative, and business components to ensure that Greenpeace can respond effectively to strategic opportunities and influence the development of relevant national and international policies, legislation, and practices
  • The strategy for the Forests & Biodiversity campaign at GP Africa is defined and shared with relevant stakeholders and the team.
  • Feedback and advice regarding the international campaign strategy are provided to the senior portfolio manager and global campaign leader.
  • Actively contributes to the development of four grant proposals annually.

Strategy and Plan Implementation  

  • Coordinate and supervise all arrangements for campaign activities as required.
  • Work with the Fundraising team to develop ways to maximize the campaign’s fundraising potential.
  • Establish communication and ensure collaboration with NGOs, partners, community leaders, and all other important stakeholders within each project as required.
  • Represent Greenpeace at meetings, coordination bodies, media, stakeholders, and local communities when required.
  • In collaboration with the Communications team, communicate with target audiences and ensure that any media intervention contributes to  campaign objectives.
  • Ensure that Greenpeace security guidelines are followed and report any security incidents as stipulated in the Standard Operating Procedure (SOPs).
  • Create or delegate the creation of substantive briefings and updates to inform staff, media, and stakeholders on specific campaign issues, progress, and outcomes.
  • Ensure monitoring and evaluation of projects and reporting to the Head of Project Development, Senior Portfolio Managers, and campaigners from other offices as required.
  • Collaborate with the Research function to mine data & insights to inform the design of responses.

Responsiveness

  • Take a Pan African Outlook to project delivery by optimizing  opportunities that advance campaign/project objectives across the continent.
  • Build responsiveness and agility within the project team to foster campaign goals.
  • Leverage responsive opportunities aligned to campaign goals to create impact.

Relationship building and networking

  • Build relationships with external stakeholders, including civil society, communities, and authorities, to push the campaign forward.
  • Active networks are built and maintained with GPI and NROs to strengthen the campaign’s impact (s).
  • Externally, active networks and strong alliances are built with key strategic stakeholders.
  • Internally, build strong relationships with cross functional teams, GPI and other stakeholders ensuring optimal quality, visibility and impact of the Forests & Biodiversity work especially the Congo Basin.

People Management 

  • Annual work plans for all team members are developed. 
  • Team members have measurable performance objectives that are reviewed periodically.
  • Regular one to one meetings are happening and feedback is provided to team members on their progress. 
  • Interns have clear work plans and are supported to learn and grow in their areas of passion. 
  • Team members have clarity about their contribution and value to the team and work to deliver as one. 

Qualifications and Experience 

  • University degree in Social Sciences, Policy, Development, Biodiversity, or related field.
  • 5 years' experience in campaign management and coordination.
  • Experience working in a multicultural team.
  • A strong Pan-African Mindset.
  • Familiarity with the project management cycle. 
  • Ability to negotiate, build consensus, convene diverse stakeholders, and facilitate dialogue to mutual outcomes.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in campaigning, creative advocacy content, execution of strategies, lobbying, and canvassing projects.
