Job Description
Job Purpose:
- The Laboratory Technologist will be responsible for performing blood collection procedures, adhering to protocols and safety measures, and producing accurate and timely laboratory test results to support diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, and prevention of diseases.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collect and acknowledge samples as per approved standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Recruit and draw blood donors in line with established protocols..
- Maintain a clean, organized workspace and ensure proper disposal of laboratory waste.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain assigned laboratory equipment; report malfunctions promptly.
- Perform internal and external quality controls, verify results, and document accordingly.
- Analyze samples as per SOPs and report results in a timely manner.
- Ensure urgent, stat, and timed specimens are processed and reported appropriately.
- Stock workstations daily with reagents and supplies for uninterrupted testing.
- Review and verify laboratory findings for accuracy and authorize results as assigned.
- Provide written handover reports to incoming staff at shift change.
- Label reagents, materials, and storage containers in line with policy.
- Store specimens under appropriate conditions and discard those exceeding retention time.
- Liaise with section heads daily for smooth operations.
- Mentor and guide new staff and students assigned to your section.
- Document and report occurrences, transfusion incidents, or safety violations as required.
- Comply with Hemovigilance reporting and quality/safety requirements.
- Read, understand, and sign off on SOPs and laboratory policies.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field from a recognized institution.
- Higher National Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences is an added advantage.
- Valid registration and practice license with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).
- Minimum 4 years of relevant experience in blood transfusion and hemovigilance in a busy hospital laboratory.
- Training in blood transfusion sciences, GCLP, and ISO 15189 implementation.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and professional ethics.
