Duties
Sample Preparation: Assist in collecting, handling, and preparing food, water, or environmental samples for microbiological analysis.
Sterilization & Media Preparation: Prepare culture media, reagents, and solutions; sterilize equipment and materials using autoclaves.
Equipment Maintenance: Help maintain lab equipment such as incubators, biosafety cabinets, microscopes, and autoclaves.
Microbiological Testing
Perform streak plating, pour plating, and spread plating.
Isolate and identify microorganisms from samples.
Conduct total plate counts, yeast and mold counts, coliform testing, etc.
Perform gram staining and other biochemical identification tests.
Test surfaces, air, water, and hands for microbial contamination (common in food manufacturing or pharmaceutical labs).
Assist in routine testing of food or product samples for pathogens like Salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, etc.
Perform shelf-life studies and monitor microbial growth over time.
Data Entry and Analysis:
Record results accurately in lab notebooks or software systems.
Interpret results under supervision and flag anomalies or contamination.
Documentation & Compliance
Maintain Lab Records:
Ensure proper documentation of experiments, tests, and findings (following GLP or GMP protocols).
Assist in Report Writing:
Help compile technical reports or summaries based on lab findings.
Follow Safety Procedures:
Adhere to biosafety protocols (BSL-1 or BSL-2), proper PPE usage, and lab hygiene practices.
Learn new lab techniques, SOPs, and analytical methods.
Molecular Techniques: PCR, DNA extraction, or electrophoresis (if the lab does molecular microbiology).
Qualifications
BSc Degree or Diploma in Food Science, Microbiology, Biochemistry.
Prior internship past experience in a microbiology laboratory. Experience in an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory will be a distinct advantage.
Team player who is proactive and result-oriented with good interpersonal skills.
