Job Purpose:
The Lead Sonographer is responsible for providing high-quality sonographic services and leading a team of sonographers in ensuring the department runs efficiently. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in obstetric sonography; experience in cardiac echocardiography is a strong advantage. This role requires excellent leadership and communication skills coupled with the ability to perform quality ultrasound examinations and produce reliable reports for clinicians.

Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Supervision: Provide leadership and guidance to a pool of sonography staff, ensuring high-quality patient care and efficient departmental operations;
Regular Performance Audits: Conduct routine audits of sonographers’ technical skills, reporting accuracy and adherence to protocols, providing structured feedback and identifying areas for improvement;
Mentorship and Capacity Building: Develop and implement mentorship plans for pool of sonographers, including hands-on training, case reviews and participate in continuous professional development initiatives to ensure consistent growth as the department expands;
Obstetric Sonography: Perform and interpret obstetric ultrasound scans, including fetal anomaly scans, growth scans, and Doppler assessments;
Cardiac Echocardiography: Perform and interpret cardiac and pediatric echocardiograms;
Image Quality and Reporting: Ensure high-quality images and accurate reporting, adhering to hospital and protocols and guidelines;
Training and Education: Provide training and mentorship to junior sonographers and other healthcare staff, promoting professional development and skill enhancement;
Quality Control and Assurance: Implement and maintain quality control measures, ensuring adherence to hospital protocols and guidelines;
Collaboration and Communication: Work closely with clinicians, consultant radiologists and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive patient care and facilitate effective communication;
Client management: Explain ultrasound procedure to patients and answering any questions they may have concerning the same services in the hospital;
Handling of Equipment: Maintain the ultrasound machines and equipment for continuous provision of ultrasound services within the hospital;
Ensure cleanliness and orderliness in the ultrasonography unit for quality services delivery in the hospital;
Documentation: Record and maintain patient’s records and adding medical notes related to the ultrasound procedure, if necessary, in the hospital;
Any other duty as may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications and Requirements
Degree or Diploma/ Higher Diploma in Medical Imaging Sciences or Radiography from a recognized institution;
Experience: Minimum 7 years of experience in sonography in a busy hospital, with at least 2 years in a leadership role;
Expertise in obstetric sonography and cardiac echocardiography;
Strong leadership and communication skills;
Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
Familiarity with quality control and assurance principles;
Basic computer skills and knowledge of picture archiving and communication systems (PACS);
Registration with the relevant regulatory body;
Valid Practice License;
Proficiency in computer applications.
