YouTube AI Overviews now show up in video search
Google is expanding its AI-powered features across its platforms—and now, YouTube AI Overviews are rolling out to some Premium users. Similar to Google Search’s AI Overviews, this new YouTube feature uses artificial intelligence to deliver quick summaries, top video suggestions, and smart answers right within the app. If you're in the U.S. and searching for things like travel tips, shopping ideas, or places to visit, you might see an AI-generated carousel summarizing relevant video content. This update, currently in testing, aims to make video discovery faster and more intuitive.
How YouTube AI Overviews work in search results
When you search on YouTube using relevant keywords, the new AI-powered results carousel will display a large highlighted video, a strip of thumbnails for related content, and a short summary generated by AI. Instead of browsing through dozens of results, you get a streamlined view powered by generative AI. Tapping the featured clip opens the video directly, helping you skip the scrolling and jump right into the content that matches your intent. This test is exclusive to the YouTube app on iOS and Android, only supports English, and is available to a limited group of Premium subscribers until July 30.
Premium test today, broader rollout soon?
YouTube’s experiments page notes that this is still a limited test. Only randomly selected YouTube Premium users in the U.S. will see these AI Overviews for now. While Google hasn’t confirmed a full release timeline, this could signal the beginning of smarter, AI-driven search experiences across more Google products. Alongside this, YouTube is also expanding its conversational AI tool—first introduced in 2023—to some non-Premium users. That tool lets you ask specific questions about videos, further showing how YouTube aims to make video interaction more natural and intelligent.
