Threads Fediverse Integration Now Live on Your Feed
Threads fediverse integration is getting a major upgrade with a new feed dedicated to content from decentralized platforms like Mastodon and Flipboard. For users already sharing to the fediverse through Threads, a new section appears at the top of the Following tab, allowing easy access to posts from federated accounts. This marks Threads’ most significant move toward supporting the broader decentralized social web. Unlike algorithmic feeds, this fediverse section is presented in reverse chronological order, offering a raw, unfiltered look at the content you follow outside Threads.
How the Threads Fediverse Feed Works
Once fediverse sharing is enabled in your Threads account, it automatically connects to Mastodon and other ActivityPub-supported services where you’ve followed users. Meta designed the new feed as a distinct experience, separated from the For You and Following feeds. According to Meta software engineer Peter Cottle, this helps with transparency, user clarity, and prevents impersonation. Posts from the fediverse aren’t subject to Threads’ ranking systems or moderation policies, making the integration feel closer to traditional RSS-style content aggregation than social scrolling.
Search and Discover Fediverse Users Through Threads
Threads has also launched a new feature that lets you search for fediverse users directly from its platform. This means you can now look up people across federated networks like Mastodon without needing to visit each server individually. It’s a huge improvement in discoverability, long a pain point for decentralized networks. Once you follow someone, their posts will show up in your Threads feed—though still within the dedicated fediverse section. This unified search functionality helps Threads act as a central point for exploring the decentralized social web.
What This Means for Threads and the Future of Social Media
Despite the growing visibility of fediverse content within Threads, full integration is still a work in progress. Users must manually opt-in to share their content, and responses to fediverse posts remain isolated. Cottle notes that keeping fediverse posts in a separate feed helps users grasp the context and nature of decentralized content. However, Meta remains committed to expanding this relationship, even as it rolls out other high-demand features like DMs and spoiler alerts. As user awareness grows, Threads fediverse integration may redefine how centralized and decentralized platforms coexist.
