T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert Is Stepping Down — Here’s Who Replaces Him
T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert is stepping down after more than five years in the role. The company announced that chief operating officer Srini Gopalan will take over as CEO on November 1st, while Sievert transitions to vice chairman.
The move marks a major leadership shift for one of the U.S.’s largest wireless carriers, coming at a time when T-Mobile is doubling down on AI, data-driven growth, and network expansion.
From John Legere to Mike Sievert
Sievert first stepped into the role in 2020, following the outspoken John Legere after T-Mobile’s blockbuster merger with Sprint. Over the years, he guided the company through acquisitions such as Mint Mobile—partially owned by Ryan Reynolds—and the agreement to acquire most of U.S. Cellular.
Earlier in 2025, Sievert faced controversy when T-Mobile scaled back its diversity and inclusion initiatives to smooth approval for its Lumos fiber acquisition. Still, his tenure solidified T-Mobile’s position as a network leader.
Who Is Srini Gopalan?
Gopalan, T-Mobile’s incoming CEO, is no stranger to the telecom world. He became COO in March 2025 after more than eight years as a Deutsche Telekom board member. His resume also includes leadership roles at Vodafone and India’s Bharti Airtel.
With his global experience, Gopalan is expected to help drive T-Mobile’s AI-enabled, digital-first strategy while maintaining the company’s customer-first culture.
What This Means for T-Mobile’s Future
In a press release, Gopalan emphasized his commitment to making T-Mobile “the most data-driven, AI-enabled, digital-first company in the industry.” The company believes its strong brand, culture, and technological edge will keep it ahead of competitors like Verizon and AT&T.
While Sievert once denied stepping down before his contract’s end in 2028, his succession plan appears to have been in motion for months. For T-Mobile customers, the transition is unlikely to bring immediate changes—but it signals a new chapter for the carrier’s long-term strategy.
With T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert stepping down, Srini Gopalan will soon take the reins. The move reflects careful succession planning and positions T-Mobile to lean even harder into AI, data, and digital-first growth.
The wireless giant’s next phase could reshape not just the company but the entire telecom industry.
