Spotify Is Adding Support For Third-Party DJ Apps Again
Spotify is adding support for third-party DJ apps, again — and this time it’s bigger than ever. Five years after pulling the plug on djay and other integrations, Spotify Premium subscribers can once more stream and mix playlists directly inside popular DJ software. The comeback includes desktop support for Algoriddim’s djay, rekordbox, and Serato.
For now, the feature is limited to Mac and Windows apps. Neither Spotify nor Algoriddim has confirmed whether mobile integration is on the roadmap, but DJs and music fans are already celebrating the return of this long-requested feature.
A Return To The DJ Booth
When I first started DJing at a local streaming radio station, Spotify and Algoriddim’s djay were my go-to tools. That all changed in 2020 when Spotify abruptly shut down third-party DJ app support, reportedly due to licensing concerns. The company even forbade track mixing in its Terms of Service.
Now, those barriers seem to have been cleared. Spotify is adding support for third-party DJ apps again, starting with djay, Serato, and rekordbox. For DJs who’ve stuck with the platform, it feels like a long-awaited homecoming.
What’s Included For Free (And What’s Not)
The good news: integration works even with the free version of djay. But if you’re serious about your craft, djay Pro offers hardware integration, advanced effects, and extra features that elevate mixing.
Since Spotify’s exit in 2020, many DJs migrated to Tidal, SoundCloud, or Apple Music within djay. Now that Spotify is back, DJs who prefer its vast library might finally return.
Why This Update Matters For DJs
Even before the shutdown, Spotify’s DJ support was limited compared to rivals. Algoriddim was the main partner, leaving many DJs asking for broader integration. This update changes that — with rekordbox and Serato onboard, two of the world’s most popular DJ platforms, Spotify is clearly signaling a renewed interest in the live-mixing community.
This move could reshape how DJs discover and share music in 2025. By reopening its ecosystem, Spotify is not just reviving old partnerships but also creating new opportunities for both hobbyists and professionals.
Spotify is adding support for third-party DJ apps again, making it easier for DJs to connect their playlists with industry-standard tools. While the feature is desktop-only for now, the return of djay alongside rekordbox and Serato is a major win for the music-mixing community.
Updated September 24th: Added details about rekordbox and Serato integration.
