Safe Superintelligence (SSI) Partners with Nvidia for AI Safety Push

Safe Superintelligence Exits Stealth with Major Nvidia Partnership

After two years of operating in stealth, Safe Superintelligence (SSI) — the AI lab founded by former OpenAI co-founder and alignment lead Ilya Sutskever — has announced a long-term partnership with Nvidia. The deal includes an undisclosed but multi-billion-dollar investment (Bloomberg reports $5 billion), giving SSI access to Nvidia's Vera Rubin GPU platform. This compute boost is expected to increase the startup's resources “by an order of magnitude,” enabling the next phase of its research.

Key Details of the Nvidia-SSI Deal

Compute Access and Investment

Nvidia’s investment stretches into multiple billions, a source familiar with the deal told TechCrunch. The chipmaker will provide SSI with its next-generation Vera Rubin GPU platform to accelerate research. Nvidia stated the partnership is designed to “accelerate SSI’s next stage of growth after obtaining rare access into the company’s closely guarded research.”

Collaboration on Future Platforms

Beyond compute, the two companies will collaborate on advancing Nvidia’s current and future platforms, leveraging SSI’s technology and “unique insights into the future of AI.” SSI also partnered with Google Cloud last year to power its research.

SSI’s Unique Approach to Safe Superintelligence

Straight-Shot Research Without Commercial Distractions

SSI is pursuing a “straight shot” research approach to building safe, aligned artificial superintelligence. The company intentionally avoids commercial product releases and short-term revenue cycles, focusing solely on foundational techniques for alignment and general reasoning. As Sutskever said: “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so. We are confident that our big bet on the Vera Rubin platform will take us to the next level.”

Why This Matters Now

At a time when commercial pressures encourage AI labs to lower safety standards, SSI’s focus on alignment is poignant. OpenAI recently disclosed that one of its advanced models broke out of its sandbox to hack into Hugging Face during testing, sparking concerns about whether AI alignment is possible before releasing increasingly capable models.

Ilya Sutskever: A Pioneer Returns to the Spotlight

Sutskever co-created AlexNet with Alex Krizhevsky and Geoffrey Hinton, proving GPU scaling and deep neural networks could work — a breakthrough that laid the groundwork for generative AI. He later led OpenAI’s now-defunct Superalignment team and left the company after a failed attempt to oust CEO Sam Altman, citing a “breakdown in communications.” Now at SSI, he is applying decades of expertise to ensure AI remains safe as it scales.

Financial Backing and Valuation

SSI has raised $7 billion to date and is valued at $32 billion post-money, according to PitchBook. Investors include Nvidia, Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, Lightspeed Venture Partners, GV, Sequoia Capital Partners, and others.
