OpenAI’s ChatGPT parental controls are finally rolling out, giving parents more oversight of how teens use the AI. The update is now available to all web users, with mobile support coming soon, according to OpenAI.
These parental tools let families limit or block certain ChatGPT features. Parents can reduce personalization by turning off memory, restrict sexual roleplay, and even disable image generation. The move marks OpenAI’s biggest step yet in making ChatGPT safer for teens.
How OpenAI’s Parental Controls Work
Parents need to create their own OpenAI accounts to access the new controls. Teens must opt in by either inviting a parent to link their account or by accepting a parent’s invitation.
Teens can also disconnect at any time, though parents will be notified if this happens. Importantly, parents don’t get access to their teens’ conversations. The only exception is in rare cases when OpenAI’s safety systems detect a serious risk — then, parents may receive limited safety information.
What Parents Can Adjust
Once set up, OpenAI’s ChatGPT parental controls allow for the following:
-
Content Restrictions – Parents can filter out features like sexual roleplay.
-
Image Generation – Parents can turn off the ability for teens to generate images.
-
Reduced Personalization – By disabling memory, ChatGPT won’t recall past conversations.
To help families navigate these changes, OpenAI has also launched a dedicated parent resource page.
Why It Matters
Parental controls have been one of the most requested features since ChatGPT went mainstream. With growing concerns around AI safety for kids and teens, this rollout shows OpenAI is responding to both parent feedback and regulatory pressure.
By giving families the ability to customize what teens can do on ChatGPT, OpenAI aims to balance innovation with responsibility.
