iOS 26 Adds Smart "Pause Media When Falling Asleep" Feature
Apple’s upcoming iOS 26 introduces a thoughtful new option for AirPods and Beats users: the pause media when falling asleep feature. This update automatically stops your music, podcast, or audiobook playback when your headphones detect you've fallen asleep. It’s designed for anyone who drifts off with earbuds in — a common habit — and aims to enhance user experience, save battery, and ensure you don’t lose your place in long-form content.
How "Pause Media When Falling Asleep" Works on AirPods and Beats
Although Apple briefly mentioned this feature during WWDC, it was initially framed as exclusive to AirPods. However, recent code discoveries by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser confirm that select Beats headphones are also supported. The feature kicks in once sleep is detected, although Apple hasn’t shared the exact method of detection. This smart functionality ensures your device pauses playback and saves your spot — whether you're listening to a podcast, audiobook, or playlist.
Where to Find the Sleep Audio Pause Option in iOS 26
Once iOS 26 is installed, the pause media when falling asleep setting is enabled by default. To manually manage it, simply connect your AirPods or Beats to your iPhone, go to the Settings app, and tap on the connected headphones. From there, you’ll find the new sleep-focused media control. Not only does this help preserve your device’s battery overnight, but it also avoids unnecessary audio playing while you sleep.
iOS 26 Availability and Device Compatibility
To use this new feature, you’ll need iOS 26 and compatible headphone firmware, which Apple is currently testing in beta. As of now, iOS 26 is available only to developers, but a public beta is expected soon, with the full release scheduled for September 2025. Whether you’re a frequent audiobook listener or just like music to fall asleep to, this update delivers a more personalized, thoughtful audio experience.
