Microsoft is taking a bold step to make its AI assistant more human-like. Microsoft is giving Copilot AI faces you can chat with, thanks to a new experimental feature called Portraits. This update introduces 40 animated avatars designed to bring natural expressions and a friendlier tone to real-time conversations.
The Portraits feature is rolling out in the US, UK, and Canada through Copilot Labs. Instead of just a voice, users can now choose from 40 stylized human avatars that smile, nod, and react during conversations. Each portrait can be paired with a voice, making interactions feel less robotic and more natural.
Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman explained on X that the change was inspired by feedback from Copilot users who wanted a “face” to talk to. Many people feel more comfortable when speaking to an avatar instead of a blank screen, and Portraits helps bridge that gap.
By adding expressive faces, Microsoft hopes to make Copilot feel more approachable, especially during voice-based interactions where tone and facial cues matter.
This isn’t the first time Microsoft has tried to give Copilot some personality. Back in July, the company introduced Copilot Appearances, which leaned more toward cartoon-like designs. The big difference now is that Portraits uses human-inspired avatars, making conversations feel closer to real human interactions.
Giving AI faces isn’t just about fun visuals—it’s about trust and usability. By making Copilot more relatable, Microsoft could encourage people to use voice chat more often instead of sticking to text. It’s another step toward creating AI assistants that feel less like tools and more like companions.
