Ex-Disney CEO Michael Eisner calls the FCC’s threats “out-of-control intimidation,” blasting the regulatory body over its pressure campaign that led Disney to pause Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely. Eisner’s sharp words mark a rare public rebuke from a former corporate leader who believes today’s executives are failing to stand up to political intimidation.
Eisner, who ran Disney for 21 years and oversaw its major acquisition of ABC in 1995, made his comments in a post on X. He questioned whether current leadership has the backbone to resist political bullying, writing, “Where has all the leadership gone?”
The FCC’s threats reportedly stemmed from remarks made on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that drew backlash from FCC chairman Brendan Carr, appointed during the Trump administration. Eisner dismissed the warnings as “hollow” and yet another example of intimidation tactics taken too far.
While Eisner didn’t directly name CEO Bob Iger or Disney TV head Dana Walden, his post suggested frustration with their decision to pause Kimmel’s show. For context, Eisner himself once made controversial calls, such as limiting the release of Martin Scorsese’s Kundun after pressure from the Chinese government. Still, this time, he appears unwilling to accept the FCC’s sway over Disney programming.
Ex-Disney CEO Michael Eisner calling the FCC’s threats “out-of-control intimidation” carries weight given his legacy at the company. His remarks highlight a growing concern among media veterans that government pressure is undermining creative freedom.
Eisner’s public criticism also underscores a larger debate: should corporate executives prioritize avoiding regulatory backlash, or should they defend free expression even when it risks conflict with political power?
