The Dutch embassy in Nairobi represents the Netherlands in Kenya, Somalia and the Seychelles, on a wide range of topics, including politics, consular affairs, migration, development cooperation, trade and investments.
It is therefore a relatively large embassy, with more than 60 employees.
In addition, the embassy represents the Netherlands at the UN institutions based in Nairobi and Nairobi offers an interesting working environment with the presence of multilateral organizations such as the World Bank, UN and the EU delegation.
Internship
Kenya has a rapidly growing economy, a rapidly emerging middle class and serves as a hub for East Africa. The Netherlands is well represented in the agricultural sector, and the embassy also sees opportunities in a number of other sectors to broaden and, where possible, strengthen economic relations. The embassy’s ‘trade and investment’ team operates at the intersection of trade and investment promotion and development cooperation, at a time when the embassy wants to raise its profile in the economic relationship with Kenya.
Job requirements
The sought candidate meets the following profile:
- You are in the master phase of a relevant university course;
- You have a demonstrable affinity with international economics;
- You can collaborate with different parties with diverse interests, such as government, business and NGOs;
- You have good oral and written skills in both Dutch and English;
- You can work independently, show initiative and creativity;
- You can easily adapt to a different (cultural) environment;

What we offer
An internship within the ‘trade and investments’ team of the Dutch embassy in Nairobi offers the opportunity to get to know the diplomatic world up close. Together with six policy officers, the intern works in the field of economic diplomacy and promoting trade relations and investments and developing the Kenyan private sector.
There is a well-developed economic relationship between the Netherlands and Kenya. For the Netherlands, Kenya is the most important export partner in East Africa. The Netherlands supplies pharmaceutical products to Kenya, among other things. Conversely, the Netherlands is the 3rd export country for Kenya worldwide. Many flowers, vegetables, fruit, coffee and tea find their way to the Dutch and European market.
The embassy is proactively committed to a strengthened trade relationship in the following sectors: Life Sciences & Health, Logistics, Maritime & Port Development, Energy, Water and Agribusiness. The work of the economic team is therefore very diverse. The team is closely involved in developing a ‘refrigerated logistics corridor’ in Kenya, it informs Dutch companies about investment opportunities, and it monitors the macroeconomic situation in Kenya. foot and works to create jobs for young people.

The intern will be actively involved in various activities and will be supervised by the internship supervisor, providing insight into the role of a policy officer at an embassy.
Learning assignment
During the internship you will work on a learning assignment, the exact theme and its specific content will be defined in consultation with you before the start of the internship. We take into account your own interests and any requirements from the study and the opportunities and possibilities that our embassy offers. Together with your internship supervisor, you will design an assignment that fits within the team’s priorities. Examples of tasks currently assigned within the team are:
- Contribute to the intervention strategies of our focus sectors healthcare and agrologistics.
- Developing studies, for example in the field of market opportunities in agtech and fintech sectors or in the field of CO2 emissions in the refrigerated logistics chain.
- Setting up a project to promote access to finance for young entrepreneurs.
- Contribute to the design of the BHO (vocational and higher education) programme.
- Provide support to the team in the preparation of a trade mission in October 2024.
