Google Search AI Mode Uses Gmail and Photos to Personalize Results
Google is taking AI-powered search to a new level with its latest update, “Personal Intelligence.” This feature allows AI Mode to analyze your Gmail inbox and Google Photos to provide highly personalized search results without manually adjusting settings. From travel suggestions to shopping recommendations, the AI can now understand your interests and habits to make everyday searches more relevant.
Eligible users of Google AI Pro and AI Ultra can opt in immediately, giving their AI Mode access to emails and photos to refine suggestions, all while maintaining privacy safeguards.
How Personal Intelligence Tailors AI Mode for You
Personal Intelligence works by referencing data already in your Google account. For example, if you have upcoming hotel bookings in Gmail, AI Mode can suggest travel itineraries or activities nearby. Similarly, holiday photos in Google Photos help the AI understand your interests and hobbies, allowing it to make personalized recommendations.
Even everyday habits influence AI Mode’s output. If you frequently post ice cream selfies or shop from certain brands, AI Mode can highlight ice cream parlors or online products that match your preferences. This level of personalization is designed to save users time and create a more seamless search experience.
Privacy Measures and User Control
Google emphasizes that Personal Intelligence is built with privacy in mind. AI Mode uses the Gemini 3 model but does not train directly on your Gmail or Photos. Instead, training is limited to AI Mode prompts and responses, keeping personal content secure while improving AI functionality over time.
Robby Stein, VP of Google Search, noted that while the feature is designed to be helpful, occasional errors can occur. Users can control how much access AI Mode has by opting in or out of Gmail and Photos connections, ensuring transparency and user choice.
Where and How to Access Personal Intelligence
Currently, Personal Intelligence is rolling out in the U.S. through Google Labs and is available only for personal Google accounts. Users with AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions can activate the feature to link their Gmail and Google Photos accounts to AI Mode.
This rollout follows Google’s initial introduction of Personal Intelligence in Gemini AI, which also analyzes Search and YouTube history for even more tailored results. By centralizing data from multiple Google services, AI Mode is positioned to offer a more intuitive and context-aware search experience.
The Future of AI-Powered Search
Personal Intelligence represents a major step toward fully contextual AI search. By analyzing everyday user data—while maintaining privacy—Google aims to deliver responses that feel personal, timely, and relevant. From planning trips to shopping online, AI Mode can anticipate user needs, potentially changing how people interact with search engines.
As AI search continues to evolve, features like Personal Intelligence could become standard, merging convenience with intelligence to make online searches smarter, faster, and more useful.
