Google Launches Gemini Spark: Its Own OpenClaw AI Agent
Wed at 8:40 AM -
What Is Google Gemini Spark?
Google has officially launched its own version of the popular OpenClaw AI agent platform, introducing Gemini Spark at Google I/O 2026. This always-on AI agent is designed to handle tasks like writing emails, tracking schedules, monitoring credit card statements for hidden subscription fees, and creating continually updated study guides.
Gemini Spark runs 24/7 using virtual machines on Google Cloud, powered by the newly introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash model. It connects seamlessly to Workspace apps such as Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, while also expanding integrations to third-party apps through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
Key Integrations and Capabilities
Gemini Spark leverages the open standard MCP to plug into external systems, including popular platforms like Canva, OpenTable, and Instacart. This allows the AI agent to perform a wide range of tasks across different applications, making it a versatile tool for productivity.
Always-On Background Operation
According to Josh Woodward, VP of Google Labs, Gemini, and AI Studio, Spark can continue working even when you close your laptop or turn off your phone. Users can text and email with Spark directly, similar to how OpenClaw users interact with their personal agents via messaging apps.
How Gemini Spark Works
Gemini Spark operates under user direction, meaning you control what it connects to and when it activates. The system requests permission before performing high-stakes actions like making payments or sending emails, ensuring user safety and control.
Local File Integration and Chrome Connectivity
This summer, Google will enable Spark to interact with local files through the Gemini app on macOS. Additionally, Spark will connect to Chrome, allowing users to view live updates on the upcoming Android Halo UI space.
Rollout and Availability
Gemini Spark is currently rolling out to trusted testers this week. It will arrive in beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US next week. The AI agent uses Google's AI-powered coding tool Antigravity, which is also receiving a major update with a new desktop app, command-line interface, and SDK for developers.
Why Gemini Spark Matters for AI Agents
Google's entry into the AI agent space with Gemini Spark signals a major shift in how users interact with AI. Unlike traditional chatbots, Spark is a persistent, always-on agent that can handle complex, multi-step tasks in the background.
Comparison to OpenClaw
While OpenClaw caused a stir earlier this year, Gemini Spark differentiates itself through deep integration with Google's ecosystem, including Workspace apps and Chrome. The use of MCP also enables broader third-party connectivity, making it a more open platform for developers.
Future Implications
With Antigravity's new SDK, developers can build custom AI tools and agents, expanding the potential use cases for Gemini Spark. This could lead to a new wave of AI-powered productivity applications across various industries.
