Foxconn to Start Making iPhone Casings in India
Apple's major manufacturing partner, Foxconn, is expanding its operations in India by starting production of iPhone casings. For the first time, Foxconn will go beyond iPhone assembly and manufacture enclosures at a brand-new facility in Oragadam, Tamil Nadu. This strategic move aims to support Apple's broader efforts to diversify its supply chain outside of China. With the iPhone casing production in India, Apple further strengthens its long-term commitment to the region.
Foxconn’s New iPhone Casing Facility in Tamil Nadu
Foxconn has secured around 500,000 square feet of space within the ESR Industrial Park in Oragadam. The new plant, now under active construction, is located near Foxconn’s upcoming display module assembly unit—another key Apple supply line that's nearly complete. Once operational, this will mark the company’s first venture into iPhone enclosure production in India. Until now, Foxconn had solely focused on assembling iPhones at its Sriperumbudur facility nearby.
Tata and Foxconn Now Share iPhone Casing Duties
Foxconn will join Tata Electronics, Apple's existing casing partner in India, which operates out of Hosur in the same state. Tata currently leads iPhone casing production in India and is reportedly increasing its output to 100,000 units to meet growing demand. Foxconn’s entry into this segment indicates Apple’s interest in having multiple domestic casing suppliers, reinforcing local manufacturing capabilities while balancing quality, speed, and cost.
Apple’s Growing India Strategy and Local Manufacturing Push
This development is a key part of Apple’s larger strategy to reduce dependence on Chinese manufacturing. In 2023, over 12 million iPhones were assembled in India, and that number is expected to double by the end of 2025. With Foxconn now handling both assembly and casing in India, Apple is clearly signaling its intent to deepen its local production footprint. The shift also aligns with Indian government initiatives to boost domestic electronics manufacturing and reduce import reliance.
