How to Enable AirPods Firmware Beta Updates on macOS Tahoe
Apple just made it easier to enable AirPods firmware beta updates directly from your Mac, thanks to the latest macOS Tahoe beta. Previously only available via iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, this new feature lets you access AirPods beta firmware updates without needing an iPhone or iPad. Whether you're a developer or soon-to-be public tester, here’s everything you need to know about how the process works and what’s coming in the latest AirPods firmware.
Steps to Enable AirPods Firmware Beta Updates on Mac
To activate beta firmware updates for your AirPods, connect your AirPods (such as the AirPods Pro 2) to your Mac. Open System Settings, go to Bluetooth, and click the (i) icon next to your AirPods. Scroll to the bottom and look for AirPods Beta Updates. From there, simply toggle the setting on. Once this is enabled, your AirPods will automatically install the beta firmware when they’re in their charging case and near your Mac. This functionality mirrors the experience already introduced on iPhones and iPads with iOS 26.
Who Can Access AirPods Beta Firmware Right Now
At the moment, Apple is limiting beta firmware access to registered developers. However, starting July 2025, Apple will begin offering public beta AirPods firmware for the first time ever. This rollout begins with the AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2, both of which are set to receive the latest firmware featuring audio and connectivity improvements. If you're eager to try new features like better call quality and enhanced audio for recordings, you'll soon be able to enroll even without a developer account.
New Features in the AirPods Beta Firmware Update
Apple’s developer beta for the AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2 brings several exciting upgrades. Notably, it includes studio-quality audio recording—perfect for interviews, podcasts, and content creation. There’s also an innovative feature that uses AirPods as a remote control for the Camera app, letting you snap pictures or start videos hands-free. Another standout feature is sleep detection—your AirPods can now pause media automatically if they sense that you've dozed off, adding a new layer of smart functionality to your listening experience.
