DoorDash has officially launched DoorDash Air, a dedicated drone delivery division that promises to speed up food delivery for mid-range orders. The company, already the largest food delivery app in the US, secured FAA Part 135 air carrier certification, enabling it to deliver small packages via drone. This move places DoorDash among other industry leaders like Alphabet's Wing, Zipline, and Amazon.

FAA Certification and Regulatory Approval

DoorDash received the Part 135 certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, clearing the way for commercial drone operations. This designation is critical for any company looking to operate drones for delivery beyond visual line of sight. Previously, DoorDash partnered with Alphabet's Wing for pilot programs in Dallas-Fort Worth, Virginia, and Australia. Now, with its own certification, the company will deploy custom-built drones designed specifically for food delivery.

Custom Drones Built by DoorDash Labs

The drones are being designed and assembled within DoorDash Labs, the division responsible for the company's robotics and AI teams. This same group built the Dot sidewalk delivery robots. DoorDash emphasizes that the drone is "American-designed and built," though the vast majority of drone components worldwide are manufactured in China. The company states: "We're designing an aircraft purpose-built for the gaps we see in local commerce."

Ground Infrastructure and End-to-End System

DoorDash is not just building drones—it is also constructing the necessary ground-level infrastructure to enable restaurants to hand off deliveries to drones. This includes specialized structures, flight plans, airspace management, and drop-off logistics. The company is committed to building this entire ecosystem in-house.

Solving Mid-Range Delivery Challenges

Drone delivery is aimed at solving the problem of mid-range deliveries (three to five miles), which often take 25% longer than shorter trips due to courier availability. DoorDash reports that over 20% of its orders fall into this distance category. By routing these orders to drones, human Dashers can focus on shorter, faster deliveries near high-concentration merchant areas, maximizing their earning potential.
