The messages linked directly to apps like Peloton and Target, integrated within ChatGPT. Users Report Irrelevant Promotional Messages
Many ChatGPT users shared screenshots showing promotional content appearing under unrelated chats. For instance, while discussing Windows BitLocker or xAI, users were shown fitness and shopping suggestions. Some paid subscribers expressed frustration that the messages felt intrusive, especially since they were not prompted by their conversation topics. The backlash highlighted how even non-financial promotions can disrupt user experience.
OpenAI’s Response to the Feedback
Mark Chen, OpenAI’s chief research officer, admitted the company “fell short” in handling ad-like suggestions. Chen emphasized that anything resembling advertising needs careful implementation, and OpenAI is now exploring better controls. Users may eventually be able to adjust or completely turn off these in-chat app recommendations, improving the chatbot experience for both free and paid subscribers.
