Stay Safe with AT&T’s New Account Lock Feature
SIM swapping attacks are on the rise, and AT&T is taking a proactive step to protect its customers. The telecom giant has launched Account Lock, a security feature that helps prevent unauthorized access to your wireless account. Available now via the myAT&T app, this feature restricts changes like SIM card swaps, number transfers, and billing updates—some of the most common tactics used in mobile identity theft.
How AT&T Account Lock Prevents SIM Swapping
SIM swapping occurs when a hacker tricks a mobile carrier into transferring your number to their device, giving them access to calls, texts, and sensitive accounts. With AT&T Account Lock, unauthorized changes to your number or SIM are blocked—even if someone tries to impersonate you. The feature adds a new layer of defense for users who want tighter control over their accounts.
Using AT&T’s SIM Swap Protection Is Simple
Activating the Account Lock is easy. Open the myAT&T app, head to Services > Mobile Security > Wireless Account Lock, and choose the numbers you want to protect. Only primary or secondary users on an account can toggle this setting, making it harder for attackers to gain entry. Once the feature is enabled or disabled, AT&T sends a confirmation email and texts all active numbers on the account.
Other Carriers Offer Similar SIM Protection Features
While AT&T is just now rolling out Account Lock widely, competitors like Verizon, T-Mobile, and Google Fi have had similar safeguards for a while. What sets AT&T apart is how integrated and user-controlled the feature is within its app. By stopping changes to authorized users, upgrades, and number transfers, Account Lock puts more power into customers' hands to guard against modern digital threats.
