AI agents are moving from hype to real-world utility — and Anthropic turns to “skills” to make Claude more useful at work. The new feature, called Skills for Claude, aims to make AI smarter at handling everyday professional tasks, from spreadsheets to brand-compliant content creation.
What Are Claude’s New “Skills”?
Anthropic describes Skills as folders containing instructions, scripts, and resources that Claude can instantly load when needed. These “mini-modules” help Claude understand your company’s workflows, guidelines, and tools — whether it’s Excel formulas, PowerPoint design, or tone-specific copywriting.
Users can even build custom Skills tailored to their jobs and share them across Anthropic’s ecosystem: Claude.ai, Claude Code, the API, and the Claude Agent SDK. According to Anthropic, big names like Box, Rakuten, and Canva are already integrating the feature into their workflows.
Making AI More Practical At Work
By focusing on Skills, Anthropic is bridging the gap between AI novelty and everyday productivity. Instead of constantly re-prompting or explaining context, users can rely on Skills to give Claude the knowledge it needs to act like a true assistant — one that “gets” your work style.
The feature is currently available for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users, signaling Anthropic’s focus on workplace adoption rather than casual experimentation.
Why Skills Matter For Anthropic
Brad Abrams, a product lead at Anthropic, told The Verge that the goal isn’t to chase benchmarks but to create AI that performs well in specific business contexts. “Skills basically give organizations a way to teach Claude to do a good job in their specific environment,” he explained.
For instance, Abrams used a built-in PowerPoint Skill to generate a full presentation on Haiku 4.5’s market performance. “Claude created well-formatted slides that were easy to digest,” he said — a strong example of how practical these tools can be.
The Bigger Picture: Agentic AI Arms Race
The push for more capable AI agents isn’t limited to Anthropic. OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are all racing to make their agents truly useful at work. From OpenAI’s Operator and Deep Research features to Google’s Gemini for Workspace, the industry is shifting from demo-ready to deployment-ready AI.
Still, as Abrams noted, progress has been incremental. Anthropic’s Skills for Claude could mark a turning point — one that prioritizes usability, customization, and real workplace results over flashy demos.
As Anthropic turns to ‘skills’ to make Claude more useful at work, it’s clear the company is betting on personalization as the next frontier of AI assistance. For professionals tired of rewriting prompts or fighting with generic responses, Claude’s Skills might finally make AI feel like a capable coworker rather than a clever chatbot.
