Amazon is taking its delivery fleet to the next level. The e-commerce giant wants to buy ‘thousands’ of Rivian’s pedal-assist cargo bikes, a move aimed at boosting micromobility options in cities across the US and Europe. These custom-designed, four-wheel bikes are part of Rivian’s Also spinoff and are based on the TM-Q quad vehicle unveiled recently in San Francisco.
The deal marks a new chapter in Amazon and Rivian’s ongoing collaboration. After years of working together on the EDV electric van, Amazon is now exploring a smaller, more agile solution for urban deliveries.
Why Amazon Is Investing in Pedal-Assist Cargo Bikes
Amazon sees micromobility as a key part of its future logistics strategy. Thousands of Rivian’s pedal-assist cargo bikes would allow the company to navigate city streets more efficiently while reducing its carbon footprint. Unlike traditional vans, these bikes can handle tight streets, limited parking spaces, and shorter delivery routes.
This investment is also a response to growing urban congestion. Cities are increasingly limiting large vehicles, making electric cargo bikes a practical and sustainable alternative.
What Rivian’s TM-Q Quad Vehicle Brings to the Table
The TM-Q quad vehicle is designed for urban logistics, featuring a pedal-assist system that supports riders over longer distances and heavier loads. Rivian’s Also team built the bike with durability, safety, and efficiency in mind.
Amazon’s fleet expansion would likely include thousands of these bikes across Europe and the US, signaling a significant step toward greener last-mile delivery solutions.
The Bigger Picture: Amazon and Rivian’s Partnership
Amazon and Rivian have a history of close collaboration. The companies previously worked on the EDV electric van, which was once exclusive to Amazon. After exclusivity ended, Rivian opened sales to other commercial fleet operators.
The move into cargo bikes shows Amazon’s commitment to diversifying its delivery methods while Rivian continues to innovate in electric transportation. This partnership highlights the evolving landscape of urban logistics and sustainable delivery.
