5 ChatGPT Prompts to Tackle Multiple Goals at Once

Why You Need a Strategy for Multiple Goals

Whether your goals are professional or personal, achieving them feels good—literally. Recent research links goal completion with specific brain signals known as “reward positivity.” Goals also have a compounding effect: the satisfaction of achieving one boosts your mood and fuels your motivation to pursue the next.

But often, the challenge isn’t setting goals—it’s following through. That’s true even for the most successful entrepreneurs. According to an Economist study, 90% of senior executives at companies with annual revenues of $1 billion or more admitted they failed to reach all their strategic goals because of poor implementation.

If you’ve lost sight of your goals or let them fall by the wayside, don’t worry—there’s still time. But you need a strategy, and ChatGPT can help.

Clarify the 'Why' Behind Each Goal

If your goals are the bullseye on a dartboard, the multicolored rings around it are the distractions. They're the hundred choices each day, big and small, that lead you away from reaching your goal. By connecting a goal to its larger purpose, however, the distractions fade to the background.

When you figure out the 'why' behind a goal, "[i]t becomes easier to decide what you should and should not be doing because your priorities are connected to a purpose," notes Harvard Business Review.

Grab a pen and paper or your favorite note-taking app and write down your goals. For each one, articulate the 'why.' Here's a prompt to get started:

"I'd like you to help me clarify the purpose behind my goals. I'll list my goals one by one. For each, ask me follow-up questions until you understand why it matters to me. Then summarize the core motivation behind the goal, explain how it contributes to my long-term vision."

Harmonize Your Objectives and Break Them Down

Conflicting goals create stress—and they lower your chance of reaching either one. You want to break into a new market, but you also want to nurture your existing customer base. You want to go to the gym before work, but you also want to catch up on sleep.

Harmonizing your goals, however, can boost your well-being, motivation, and goal-directed action, making it more likely that you achieve all of them, according to recent research. The trick is identifying the link between goals—for example, sleeping better improves your energy levels and decreases the likelihood that you hit the “snooze” button rather than the treadmill.

Then break big goals down. Viewing a goal as one monolithic goalpost makes getting there feel overwhelming, but smaller, more attainable goals make the entire process feel doable. Turn your goal into a step-by-step roadmap with actionable tasks, suggested timelines, and any dependencies.

Track Progress and Overcome Doubts

Once your goals are broken down, establish how you’ll measure progress. Borrow a strategy from Harvard Business School: the balanced scorecard. Define the KPIs to track progress, review them regularly, and let the data guide your next move.

Try this prompt to build your scorecard: “Help me create a scorecard for this goal: [describe goal]. Identify the leading KPIs I should track and a brief description of how to measure success. Present everything in a concise table and recommend adjustments if I fall behind.”

Doubts are natural, but when they become too consuming, they can derail your progress. Questioning your doubts can actually make you more committed to your goals—a technique researchers call “meta-cognitive doubt.”

Use ChatGPT as a devil’s advocate: “I’m worried that: [describe your doubt]. Instead of reassuring me, challenge my assumptions. Point out where I’m catastrophizing or overlooking evidence to the contrary, then end with one practical action I can take this week.”
