AI failures become even more alarming in biometric systems. Facial recognition frequently misinterprets paralysis, involuntary movement, or atypical muscle tone, leading to higher misidentification rates. Voice recognition tools struggle with speech differences, stutters, assistive devices, or auditory processing disorders. For many users, this means constant correction or total system breakdown. These are not edge cases—they affect millions of people. Disability reveals the cracks in systems marketed as universal. When AI cannot understand human variation, it becomes a barrier, not a breakthrough.
Global AI policy leader Megan Bentley argues that AI does not create inequality from scratch—it formalizes existing hierarchies. When Disabled people are missing from governance, exclusion becomes systematized rather than interpersonal.
