Why Insider Threat Risk Is Growing in the Age of AI and SaaS
As businesses rapidly adopt AI tools and SaaS applications, a hidden danger is escalating—insider threat risk. According to a recent CloudEagle.ai report, nearly 50% of employees have excessive access privileges, and 48% of ex-employees retain access to business apps long after leaving. With IT teams losing visibility into "invisible IT," where over 60% of tools bypass traditional controls, the insider risk landscape is quickly becoming more dangerous, especially with the rise of generative AI.
Insider threat risk is rising in SaaS and AI environments
CloudEagle’s survey of 1,000 CIOs and CISOs reveals that insider threat risk now stems largely from unmanaged access to AI and SaaS platforms. As shadow IT spreads—where employees use tools outside the IT department’s knowledge—identity governance is breaking down. Alarmingly, most organizations lack proper controls to enforce least privilege policies or conduct regular access reviews, allowing “privilege creep” to spiral unchecked.
Former employees pose a major access security threat
The report highlights a troubling trend: 48% of former employees still have access to company apps months after leaving. This creates a massive gap in security posture, as unmanaged credentials increase vulnerability to breaches and non-compliance. Yet only 5% of companies enforce true least privilege access, and just 15% use just-in-time access, a key control that ensures credentials are temporary and purpose-specific.
AI governance is now essential for mitigating insider risks
With AI usage booming in the workplace—both authorized and unauthorized—governing AI access is no longer optional. Over 70% of leaders flagged unsanctioned AI tools as a growing security risk. As traditional IAM tools struggle to control decentralized environments, businesses need modern Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) solutions. These tools support real-time access management, review automation, and AI governance, helping reduce insider threats without slowing down innovation.
