The Unicode Consortium has approved the UAE dirham symbol for encoding in Unicode version 18.0, making it easier for device manufacturers to implement the symbol on computers and smartphones from September.

The new symbol, unveiled by the Central Bank of the UAE in 2025, represents the stability of the dirham and incorporates the UAE flag colors in its digital version.

While adoption may take time, the symbol is designated for the number 6 key across keyboards. Unicode’s update also includes 13,048 new characters and scripts like Chisoi from India, marking a milestone in global digital currency representation.
