Yard Marshal

Role Overview

This position is all about keeping a busy transport yard running safely, predictably, and without incident. You will be the on-the-ground authority managing the flow of trucks, trailers, pedestrians, and other vehicles, with a special focus on coordinating early-morning fueling so that trucks can leave for distribution on time, including Sundays and public holidays. Your work directly protects people, protects the customer’s product and DHL assets, and reduces operational risk through strict supervision, driver coaching, and proactive enforcement of yard rules.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct and control all movement inside the yard—trucks, forklifts, delivery vans, motorcycles, and pedestrians—ensuring designated routes, clear zones, and safe reversing and coupling practices at all times.
• Oversee the fueling operation each day starting at 6:00 a.m., including weekends and public holidays, verifying fuel quantities against approved documentation and ensuring seals and padlocks are correctly fitted after fueling.
• Supervise the offloading of fuel into the bowser, performing quality sign-off and ensuring the process is completed without interruption or risk.
• Organize the yard layout by isolating parking areas for loaded trailers, empty trailers, and vehicles on VOR status, and coordinate the movement of trucks to the carwash and workshop as needed.
• Enforce pre-trip inspection procedures, ensuring that trucks leaving the yard have valid county permits, insurance, and NTSA inspection certificates, and that any mechanical issues are re-routed for immediate repair.
• Monitor driver behavior and vehicle condition, intervening immediately on speeding, aggressive driving, phone use, fatigue, poor load securing, leaks, or any other unsafe signs, and escalating serious non-compliance.
• Maintain accurate, real-time records of all trailer movements, arrivals, departures, and decoupling in the Yard Management System or manual logs, and ensure delivery documents are properly matched and surrendered to security.
• Apply the DHL six-step security framework, safeguard customer and DHL assets, and keep yard infrastructure—signage, barriers, wheel chocks, cones, and dock locks—in visible, working condition.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
• Valid heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver’s license, with practical driving competence.
• At least 3 years of work experience in a high-volume transport or logistics yard environment as a yard marshal, traffic controller, or equivalent role.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly for reporting and record keeping.
• Demonstrated report-writing ability and basic incident investigation skills.
• Solid understanding of yard safety protocols, vehicle fitness requirements, and regulatory compliance for commercial trucks.
• Ability to work early shifts, weekends, and public holidays as part of the normal operating schedule.
