Role Overview
This position delivers hands-on technical instruction within a tertiary training environment, guiding learners from foundational theory through to competent, job-ready practice. Working closely with programme coordinators and fellow trainers, the role holder plans sessions, assesses learner performance, and keeps delivery aligned with the structures and standards that govern tertiary training. The impact is direct: learners gain the practical competence employers expect, and the organisation maintains the quality and credibility of its training programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver technical training sessions that combine theoretical instruction with supervised practical work, matching content to the level and pace of each learner group.
- Prepare session plans, learning materials, and practical exercises that reflect current industry practice and the requirements of the relevant qualification.
- Assess learner competence through practical observations, written work, and verbal questioning, and provide clear, constructive feedback on progress.
- Maintain accurate training and assessment records, including attendance, achievement, and any additional learning support provided.
- Keep training equipment, tools, and workshop spaces safe, serviceable, and ready for use, reporting faults and arranging maintenance where needed.
- Apply the organisation's tertiary training structures and quality processes, ensuring delivery, assessment, and moderation meet internal and external requirements.
- Support learners who are struggling to meet competency standards, adapting delivery methods and arranging additional guidance where appropriate.
- Maintain personal technical and teaching currency, and contribute to reviews of course content so programmes stay relevant to industry needs.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent qualification in the relevant technical field.
- A Technical Training Education qualification or equivalent trainer credential is mandatory for this position.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of tertiary training structures, including how programmes are organised, delivered, and quality assured.
- At least three years' relevant experience in a similar training role or within a comparable training environment.
- Confidence in delivering both classroom-based and practical instruction to groups of varying ability and prior experience.
- Sound assessment judgement, with the ability to make consistent, well-evidenced decisions about learner competence.
- Strong communication and record-keeping skills, and a commitment to safe working practices in training areas.
