Role Overview
As a Technical Trainer, you will be the bridge between industry practice and learner capability, planning and delivering hands-on instruction that prepares students for real technical work. You will work inside a tertiary training setting, translating curriculum outcomes into structured practical sessions, assessments and workshop activities. The quality of your delivery directly shapes learner pass rates, workplace readiness and the reputation of the training programme you support.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver technical training sessions, balancing theoretical instruction with supervised practical work in a workshop, laboratory or simulated workplace setting.
- Prepare session plans, learning materials, demonstration models and assessment instruments that align with approved curriculum and qualification outcomes.
- Assess learner competence through observation, practical tasks, written work and portfolios, and provide clear, constructive feedback on progress.
- Maintain accurate training and assessment records, including attendance, results and evidence of competency, in line with institutional and accreditation requirements.
- Ensure tools, equipment and training facilities are safe, serviceable and set up correctly before each session, reporting faults and coordinating repairs promptly.
- Support learners who are struggling, adapting your approach to different learning styles, backgrounds and levels of prior experience.
- Keep your own technical and instructional knowledge current by engaging with industry developments, new equipment and updated training methodologies.
- Contribute to programme review, moderation and continuous improvement activities alongside colleagues and academic leadership.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent qualification in the relevant technical field.
- A recognised technical training or education qualification — this is mandatory for all trainer positions.
- At least three years of relevant experience in a similar trainer role or within a structured training environment.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of tertiary training structures, including how programmes, qualifications and assessment frameworks fit together.
- Confident practical competence in the technical discipline you will be teaching, with the ability to demonstrate procedures safely and accurately.
- Strong communication and learner-management skills, with the patience to explain technical concepts clearly to people at different stages of development.
- Sound organisational habits for planning sessions, managing group dynamics and meeting assessment and reporting deadlines.
